Exercising during Fasting: Is it Beneficial?

Some people treat fasting like a challenge. No food, a hard workout, a long run and perhaps a sauna afterwards. The assumption is that the more pressure you apply, the better the results will be. But what is the body actually trying to do during a fast?

When food stops arriving, the body has to reorganise how it supplies energy and so, stored glycogen is used, more fat is released and the liver begins producing more ketones.

Exercise increases the demand for energy at the same time. That does not automatically make exercise harmful. For example, walking, stretching and gentle movement like yoga may feel perfectly comfortable during a fast. An overnight fast before a workout is very different from exercising after several days without food.

During a longer fast, hard training can use up energy and fluids that the body needs elsewhere an you may feel weaker, become dizzy more easily and take longer to recover afterwards.

Fasting is not the time to prove how tough you are. If the purpose is to give the body a period of rest, piling extra physical stress on top can work against that opportunity.

Movement and exercise are not the same thing. A slow walk may help you feel settled but a hard gym session, long cycle ride or intense game of sport is asking something very different from the body.

You should always pay attention to how long you have been fasting, how stable you feel and how quickly you recover. Do not ignore dizziness, confusion, chest pain or fainting in an attempt to “push through”.

When you fast, do you feel better with gentle movement, or does your body ask you to stop and rest?
