Think about everything our bodies do without us even asking. When we’re too hot, we sweat.
When we’re cold, we shiver. When we’re at high altitude, we gradually make more red blood cells. When food isn’t available, our bodies start producing ketones.
The body is constantly adapting to keep us alive.

What Are Ketones?
Ketones are molecules made by the liver from stored fat when there’s very little glucose available. Normally, our body runs primarily on glucose from carbohydrate-rich foods such as fruit. But during a prolonged fast, there isn’t a constant supply of glucose coming in. The body starts converting stored fat into ketones, which many tissues, including the brain, can use for energy. It’s an incredible piece of biological engineering.
Ketones are an emergency fuel that allows us to survive periods without food. Without them, our ancestors probably wouldn’t have survived long winters, droughts or famine.

The Brain Loves Ketones During Fasting
The brain normally relies heavily on glucose and during fasting, however, it gradually begins using more ketones. This is a clever survival strategy. If the brain depended entirely on glucose throughout a fast, the body would have to break down far more muscle to make it. Ketones reduce that need, helping preserve lean tissue while allowing the fast to continue.
A fast isn’t simply about not eating. It’s a period of intense internal housekeeping. The body starts reallocating resources, breaking down old materials, conserving what it needs, and adapting every hour to the changing conditions.
When we stop constantly demanding that the body digest, absorb and process food, it has an opportunity to redirect its energy elsewhere. That’s where fasting becomes so fascinating. Not because ketones are some magical fuel. But because they reveal just how adaptable, resourceful and intelligent the human body really is.
