IBS: The Body’s Call to Restore Gut Balance

IBS is one of the most common digestive conditions, yet it’s also one of the most misunderstood. People are told they have a “sensitive gut,” or that it’s something they’ll just have to manage. The symptoms vary: bloating, discomfort, gas, cramping, and a bowel that seems unpredictable, sometimes moving too quickly, sometimes not moving at all.

IBS is not random. It reflects pressure, irritation, and altered movement within the digestive system.

The digestive tract is designed to move food through in a coordinated way. Food enters the stomach, is broken down, and then gradually moves through the small and large intestines. Along the way, nutrients are absorbed and waste is prepared for elimination. This system depends on rhythm, timing, and flow. When that rhythm is disrupted, symptoms appear.

One of the key factors in IBS is gas and pressure. 

When food sits in the digestive system longer than it should, particularly foods that are dense or difficult to break down, fermentation can occur which produces gas. Gas increases pressure in the intestines. That pressure stretches the intestinal walls, which can trigger discomfort, bloating, and changes in movement. This is not the body malfunctioning. It is the body responding to what is happening inside.

Studies have shown that fermentation of certain carbohydrates in the gut increases symptoms, which is why approaches like low-FODMAP diets sometimes reduce discomfort by temporarily lowering fermentable load.

But the deeper question is why food is fermenting in the first place?

When the body is given more than it can comfortably process, whether through large meals, frequent eating, or complex food combinations, digestion slows and food sits longer. The longer it sits, the more likely it is to ferment. This creates gas, irritation, and pressure. This helps explain the common IBS pattern of bloating after meals. It is not just about the type of food. It is about how that food is being processed within the body.

The bowel then responds to this pressure in different ways. In some cases, it speeds things up, leading to diarrhoea. In others, it slows things down, leading to constipation. Both are responses. The body is either trying to move the pressure out quickly or holding back because the system is not ready to move efficiently.

The nervous system also plays a role. The gut and nervous system are closely linked, often referred to as the gut–brain connection. Research in Neurogastroenterology & Motility shows that stress and emotional load can change how the gut moves and how sensitive it becomes. When the body is in a more alert state, digestion can become less coordinated. This adds another layer to the cycle.

But one of the most important and often overlooked factors is the internal environment created by diet and substances entering the body. Foods that are highly processed, low in natural hydration, or difficult to break down increase the workload of the digestive system. The same applies to substances like medications, which the body also has to process and deal with. These can irritate the system, alter normal digestive function, and contribute to the kind of disruption seen in IBS.

On the other hand, foods that are simple and water-rich tend to move through more efficiently. From a Natural Hygiene perspective, fruits and whole plant foods reduce digestive load. They are easier to process, less likely to ferment in the same way, and support smoother movement through the system.

Meal timing matters. Constant eating keeps the digestive system active without giving it time to complete its processes. When the body is always digesting, it is more likely to fall behind. This increases the chance of food sitting and fermenting. Studies on meal spacing and time-restricted eating show improvements in digestive efficiency and symptom reduction simply by allowing the system to rest between meals.

Hydration supports movement as well. Fluids help maintain the consistency of digestive contents and support the flow through the intestines. Gentle movement, such as walking, can also stimulate natural bowel activity and reduce stagnation.

One of the fastest and most efficient ways you can create the right environment for your body to heal and find its balance is through a liquid fast. When the load is reduced and when the system is supported, the body often responds. It becomes less about controlling symptoms and more about changing the conditions that created them. And if you support it with foods that nourish you and habits that sustain you after your fast, the system begins to find its rhythm again.
